Satanicpornocultshop ”Takusan No Ohanasan” (Vivo Records)
C’est Sonore -label monté par un ex Belly Button et auquel on doit des parutions aussi hétéroclites que passionnantes telles que Yuko Nexus6, Hoppy Kamiyama, Chris Brown, Ruins, Carl Stone ou Les Hauts De Plafond- qui le premier a rendu les disques de Satanicpornocultshop disponibles en France, d’abord en proposant via un mailorder toujours intriguant les CD du groupe publiés au Japon par Nu NuLAX NuLAN puis en produisant lui-même le groupe. Sonore en tant que label physique n’est plus (le catalogue complet peut être consulté ici) mais en ce qui concerne Satanicpornocultshop, le polonais Vivo semble avoir pris le relais. Les deux maisons ont en commun un profond goût pour l’éclectisme musical -jugez plutôt les références Vivo : Scorn, Merzbow, Damo Suzuki, Volcano The Bear, Acid Mothers Temple…

Takusan No Ohanasan est déjà la troisième sortie de Satanicpornocultshop pour Vivo et c’est de loin la plus poppy et la plus accessible. Le groupe s’était déjà illustré dans le passé en reprenant Reality, le générique de La Boom (hum), en version dub sucrée avec chant féminin pouvant éventuellement rappeler les petites culottes en coton de Sophie Marceau, ou le célébrissime Porque Te Vas (je ne peux pas résister) façon danse hip hop d’hippopotames sous champis. Ce nouvel album va encore plus loin dans le mambo miam-miam digne de l’Eurovision pour schtroumpfs carbonisés.

Comme toujours agrémenté d’illustrations sous forme de collages à base de photos de mannequins agrémentées de tout et n’importe quoi (ma version préférée est celle qui figure à l’intérieur avec une entrecôte en guise de tatouage sur l’épaule de la jeune fille), ce nouvel album de Satanicpornocultshop est une collection de titres originaux mélangés avec des remix. Se côtoient des titres fortement marqués à la fois par le hip hop tordu, l’électronica légo et la pop. Parfois le résultat fait penser à nos petits nationaux de DAT Politics, avec beaucoup plus de caramel et de gingembre dans la mixture. C’est toujours très drôle, la plupart du temps absurde, des fois emmerdant comme un gag trop forcé par un comique caricatural mais cela reste sans cesse plein d’imagination, de petites trouvailles fourmillantes, de maîtrise du sampling, de gounetterie en pleine adoration.

En ce qui concerne les invités remixés, les illustres inconnus côtoient les célébrités oubliées (ah non, il y a les français bêtifiant de Dragibus, très populaires au Japon mais aussi Yuko Nexus6 et les excellents Cercueil ou Steeple Remove). Qui a déjà entendu parlé de Catherine Ferroyer Blanchard ? Tu es sûr de toi ? Ces interventions, souvent avec voix, apportent un grand courant d’air frais et encore plus de diversité à un disque qui sans ça ne résisterait pas à l’effet de lassitude car c’est là tout le problème des enregistrements de Satanicpornocultshop -et Takusan No Ohanasan n’échappe pas à la règle : le génialement foutraque, la bidouille électro ultime y côtoient le remplissage, la facilité, l’épanchement. Cet album reste tout de même l’un des plus réussis du groupe.

I have this image of Japan in my mind. I imagine every street is like walking down the Las Vegas strip or Times Square in New York. I imagine moving sidewalks crammed with thousands of people at three in the morning. I imagine forty story neon signs blinking and buzzing. People wearing cartoon animal suits yelling through loudspeakers in foreign languages. Street signs that mean nothing but are aesthetically pleasing. Vending machines where you can buy sushi or little girls panties. I mean that’s what Japan IS like isn’t it? Satanicpornocultshop has done nothing to dispel these notions from my mind. Satanicpornocultshop sounds exactly like my naïve misconception of Japan. So of course it fits that they are Japanese!

Due to the vagueness of the packaging and the internet, I am not entirely certain if this is an album of remixes and collaborations or what. The tracklisting on the CD is full of phrases like “produced by Satanicpornocultshop”, and what I take to be the names of other artists. I know for sure the tracks featuring Catherine Ferroyer Blanchard (www.myspace.com/catherineferroyerblanchard) are remixes, because I have heard the originals. But what about all the other artists(?) like Meat Hope, Cercueill, Dragibus, Yuko Nexus 6, Hotentot Apron, Steeple Remove and MC Yes? On these tracks that mention other artists there is no continuity of grammar (engrish perhaps) to lend any clarity to this situation. The website and myspace call it an album and make no mention whatsoever of remix or collaboration. What makes it maddening is that with the exception of the Catherine Ferroyer Blanchard tracks, it all sounds like Satanicpornocultshop without any outside influences or materials. I don’t know what to make of it.

Apart from the confusion of the packaging this is a fun album. There is a cacophony of languages, I can pick out French, English, and Japanese, and there are other moments where I’m not sure what language is being spoken. There are also a million different samples. It seems like these guys sampled everything they’ve ever listened to. Off the top of my head I can recall samples of Billie Holliday, Iggy Pop, Elvis Presley, and all sorts of stuff that I know are samples but whose origins elude me. There is a sense of collage on this album that begins with the packaging. The CD case features various stages of a really nice collage that was probably done digitally. The music itself sounds like it has been cut up, rearranged and pasted back down as well. Everything is done at a breakneck, spazzed out, glitchy speed. Even the slower numbers seem to reel by with an idiotic intensity. I like the ridiculous jocularity of this album. If I didn’t know this was a serious band with many releases I would think it was a joke. This is a fun album if you are in the right mood, but I could see it just being annoying if you aren’t.

The standout tracks on this album are the remixes of Catherine Ferroyer Blanchard. The three songs she sings on seem to me miles better than the rest of the album. They flow well. They don’t have the frenetic “rushing to the end” feeling that most of the other tracks have. These three songs have a well defined beginning middle and end. Catherine Ferroyer Blanchard is a songstress in the Paris electro scene. She has a nice, kind of fey voice. Her vocals remind me of the old Ye – ye girls of sixties France. I only have vague ideas of what she is singing about, but I really like these songs. “chanson d’amour” seems to have the beat of a neofolk song I have heard before. I cant be sure of this, but every time I hear that song I rack my brain trying to think up which band it was. I like the remix treatment of these songs better tthan I like the originals. They lose the dancefloor sensibilities they previously had and gain a kind of dreamy feel so you can listen to them outside of the club. I would like to hear some more collaboration between these two artists in the future. Their respective sounds go together quite nicely.

I like this album, but it seems lacking in some way. It seems pointless, like I said earlier, it could be taken as a joke if I didn’t know better. I cant figure out what the artistic statement behind this music is supposed to be. I have to say though, It must take an enormous amount of work to produce a record like this. I cant imagine the many hours spent in front of computers and mixing boards required to get this right. Satanicpornocultshop has put out a well rounded slab of ridiculousness that should at least crack a smile on any listeners face.

Il secondo lavoro per Vivo Records del collettivo di Osaka si colloca consapevolmente a meta strada tra la provocazione tout court ed il collage dadaista, rivendicando un'identita meticcia che di piu non si puo. La formazione si e gia distinta in passato per una forma di plunderfonia selvaggia ma sempre accuratamente controllata ed organizzata in composizioni che preferiscono la melodia al disorientamento, pur sviluppandosi su incastri improbabili. Il mix saccheggia - lungo ventisette tracce di media o breve durata - un immaginario che corre idealmente lungo cinquant'anni di musica, derubando indifferentemente pop ed elettronica, musica tradizionale ed hip hop, scorie concrete e pensieri classici, indugi jazzati e brandelli di soundtrack. Da Nexus 6 a Nico Devos raccogliendo tutto cio che in mezzo puo passare. Tutto il materiale raccolto viene frammentato, scucito e rammendato via laptop e turntable, e se pur il risultato e ovviamente spiazzante il gruppo riesce a mantenere una presa sicura su una certa fruibilita. Per non dire orecchiabilita e rischiare di essere fuorvianti. La tecnica di assemblaggio merita piu di un ascolto disattento, e ne costituisce una prova la menzione onoraria presso il prestigioso Prix Ars Electronica, un valore aggiunto che se pur non influenza la complessita della proposta dipinge i Satanicpornocultshop come un apprezzabilissimo esempio di musica elettronica a cavallo tra il contemporaneo ed il post-moderno.

Co mają wspólnego ze sobą Zambrów i Osaka? W końcu, jak mogłoby by się wydawać, geograficznie i kulturowo leżą od siebie "hen, hen daleko". Pozory jednak mylą. Przynajmniej w pewnym względzie.

W Zambrowie swoją siedzibę ma bowiem niewielka oficyna wydawnicza Vivo Records. Niewielka, nie znaczy bez znaczenia. Recenzje jej płyt można znaleźć m.in. w "The Wire", bodajże najbardziej renomowanym periodyku poświęconym muzycznej awangardzie. Kierujący wydawnictwem, Janusz Leszczyński, gustuje od jakiegoś czasu w alternatywie rodem z Kraju Kwitnącej Wiśni. I tak, w katalogu Vivo znajdujemy psychodeliczny rock Acid Mothers Temple, siarczysty, cyfrowy noise Merzbow, czy solowe płyty KK Null, lidera hardcore'owej formacji Zeni Geva. Także ostatnia pozycja w ofercie labelu nosi etykietkę "Made in Japan". Dokładnie "Made in Osaka".

Nazwa Satanicpornocultshop jest tyleż kuriozalna, co enigmatyczna. Tyleż surrealistyczna, co egzotyczna. Takie są też pseudonimy członków grupy: Ugh, Frosen Pine czy Es. Japończycy wydają się odwoływać do tej samej tradycji, co The Residents na płycie "The Third Reich'n'Roll". Tradycji, w której nieistotna jest postać artysty, a muzyka jest produktem studyjnej manipulacji, w której czar popkultury ulega groteskowej deformacji. Sami muzycy, odwołując się do koncepcji Claude'a Levi Straussa, określają swoje brzmienie mianem "bricolage hip-hop". I faktycznie, muzyka ta ma zdecydowanie hiphopowy vibe. Ale daleki od jakichkolwiek schematów. Jest tu miejsce zarówno dla klasycznego rapu, jak i tradycyjnych japońskich skal, zmysłowego electro, cukierkowatej emotroniki, czy naiwnego avant-popu. Zaiste, skomplikowana to mozaika. Dziesiątki ultrakrótkich sampli układają się tu w gęste orientalne wzory, groteskowo trawestujące różne oblicza współczesnej muzyki pop. Rozkosznie wymagające. Jak jedzenie pałeczkami. ★★★★☆

Strach się bać, gdy szalony kolektyw japońskich alchemików studyjnej dekonstrukcji dźwięków po raz kolejny oferuje nam dobyty ze swego transmutacyjnego pieca zestaw kamyków filozoficznych, skrzących się bogactwem brzmień i konceptów, którym można by z powodzeniem obdzielić kilkanaście standardowych płyt z przebojami muzyki klubowej. Nowy Satanicpornocultshop oczywiście nie zaskakuje, ponieważ każdy miłośnik tej formacji od dawna już spodziewa się po dokonaniach swych faworytów wszystkiego, choć przecież nie czegokolwiek. Tak jest i tym razem, lecz trzeba przyznać, że Japończycy zdają się być nieco bardziej miłosierni, proponując raczej stonowany i w związku z tym przystępniejszy w odbiorze koktajl muzyczny złożony z groteskowych karykatur szlagierów pop, dubowych patentów, dalekich ech reggae, sporej dawki hip hopu, rytmicznych łamańców i producenckich patentów godnych Madliba. Przesłodzone, oniryczno-zmysłowe żeńskie wokale, nagłe i nieoczekiwane zwroty akcji, plądrofoniczne eskapady w krainę radosnego kiczu, eksplozje dźwiękowego chaosu i niekłamany, bezpretensjonalny wdzięk tubylców popkultury składają się na godzinną muzyczną odyseję wesołych eksperymentatorów, żeglujących śmiało między Scyllą MTV a Charybdą awangardy. Co ciekawe, z każdą kolejną płytą sataniczno-okultystyczny porno shop zbliża się coraz bardziej do pozycji postmodernistycznego Franka Zappy XXI wieku. I ten "popowy" album zwariowanych didżejów dowodzi tego najlepiej. Jedna z nielicznych płyt, która sprawdzi się jako "snobistyczny produkt dla przeintelektualizowanych miłośników awangardy", rozkręcając zarazem niejedną imprezę taneczną. This is the second release by Japanese Satanicpornocultshop for Polish label Vivo Records, following the lengthy EP '.aiff Skull' (see Vital Weekly 554). I have just finished my supper and the last thing of day will be this CD. Not a great CD for a food coma. That's not because this is a bad CD, not at all actually. This is a great CD, but loaded with information. Packed to the top with sound. Satanicpornocultshop are a Japanese group of samplemaniacs. They take everything from the hundred years of popular music and effectively messes things up in a totally wild mixture of sound, rhythm and electronics. I switch it off and start hearing something else, until the food has come down, make a new coffee and then start, afresh again. Hip hop, easy tune, rap, break beat, everything runs rampant in this mix. Sweet female, french vocalists, cliche pop, cheesy easy tune, loud rhythm, deep bass, this is party music bar none. The dancing was last night, but in the after party of tonight Satanicpornocultshop play a bunch of great tunes, providing a big smile on this face. I mean, 'Heineken - fuck that shit' is shouted somewhere, and I couldn't agree any less, that beer is piss. I must admit the tracklisting doesn't make any sense at all. There are many names, but it says produced by Satanicpornocultshop, so we may come to the conclusion that these are remixes? But do we care? Hardly. A long list of tracks, twenty-six in total, with confusing credits, but making a strong CD. That's what matters. Satanicpornocultshop will leave you breathless with the highly curious but gorgeous great take on popmusic. Plunderphonics gone music - at last! (FdW)
